About this event
“Breathless tension” — The Cleveland Orchestra is among America’s Big Five symphony orchestras. Under George Szell it rose to international prominence in the mid-20th century, and since 2002 Franz Welser-Möst has continued this distinguished line of music directors. He remains at the helm through 2027. As part of a European tour, the Orchestra appears with Welser-Möst in a program spanning from the Classical era to the present day. Framed by the Konzerthaus as “Festive, intense, and domestic,” the evening opens festively with Mozart’s final Salzburg symphony, moves to a contemporary centerpiece with Bernd Richard Deutsch’s Intensity, and closes on a domestic note with Strauss’s autobiographical Symphonia Domestica. The concert is part of the Wiener Konzerthaus’s Masterworks series. The 2026/27 season marks the final year of Welser-Möst’s 25-year tenure; Vienna is one of the main stops on the European tour.
