A concert framed as “Musical Fairy Tales,” it marks Elim Chan’s Wiener Konzerthaus debut as the Wiener Symphoniker’s new Artistic Partner. Sofia Gubaidulina’s shimmering Märchen-Poem (1971) opens the evening with a twelve‑minute orchestral fantasy. At the center, Gidon Kremer—who premiered the work—returns to Alfred Schnittke’s Violin Concerto No. 4 (1984), a 33‑minute score in the composer’s polystylistic idiom, where baroque gestures collide with modern intensity. After intermission, Chan curates a 40‑minute arc from Prokofiev’s Cinderella (ballet op. 87) and the concert suite (op. 107), shaping a wordless narrative from hearth to ball to glass‑slipper reunion. It is a pure symphonic concert—no staging—where concept, interpretation and orchestral color carry the storytelling.
