About this event

This concert is part of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra’s international tour with chief conductor Alan Gilbert and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, who launches his tenure as the orchestra’s Artist in Residence with this appearance. The programme spans orchestral repertoire from late Romantic Brahms through French Impressionism into the early 20th century. Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2—monumental in scale yet notably lyrical—opens the evening. After the interval come Debussy’s La mer, evoking the sea’s changing moods in impressionistic colours, and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2, hailed by Igor Stravinsky as “one of the loveliest products in all French music.” The performance forms part of the Wiener Konzerthaus subscription “Orchester international” (9 concerts in the Great Hall). Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft.
