This concert opens the Wiener Konzerthaus subscription cycle “Belcea & Ébène,” a complete traversal of Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets curated for the composer’s 2027 anniversary year. Across six evenings from October 2026 to May 2027, the Belcea Quartet and Quatuor Ébène share the journey from Beethoven’s alert early quartets through the fiery middle period to the transcendent late works. Program I pairs one early quartet (Op. 18 No. 2) with two late masterpieces (Op. 135 and Op. 131). Op. 18 No. 2 comes from Beethoven’s first published set of six quartets; Op. 135 was his final completed quartet; and Op. 131 is widely regarded as one of his most challenging late scores. The Belcea Quartet performs in classic chamber-music formation without a conductor.
