Don Quixote is one of the great 19th‑century narrative ballets, premiered in 1869. The Meiningen production follows the choreographic tradition of Marius Petipa and weaves selected themes from Cervantes’ novel into the ballet’s framework. Choreographer Jorge Pérez Martínez, Ballet Director at the Landestheater Eisenach, draws clear inspiration from flamenco, extending Petipa’s classical vocabulary with Andalusian movement qualities. Léon Minkus’s extroverted, buffo‑tinged score echoes Spanish dances and shines with elegant, expressive melodies. In Meiningen a reduced orchestral version by Jonathan McPhee is used. A pre‑performance introduction is offered in the foyer before each show.
