The 2026/27 Philharmonic Classical Concerts subscription opens with a thematically linked program focused on works with debated authorship: Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Haydn (the theme now thought not to be by Haydn) and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon (whose attribution has also been questioned). Despite doubts, both pieces remain staples and here lead into the emotional centerpiece: Schumann’s Requiem, the last large-scale work he fully completed before his death. The concert brings together the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, its resident Choir, and the Megaron Chamber Choir under German conductor Michael Sanderling, with eight soloists — four principal wind players and four vocal soloists.
