The concert pairs Mozart's popular Piano Concerto No. 21 (whose second movement ranks among Mozart's most frequently performed pages today) with two 20th-century responses by composers who either re-engaged with classical forms out of stylistic exhaustion or used classical idioms as covert political resistance. The youthfully classical restraint of Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1 ("Classical"), drafted at age 26, is set against Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9 (1945), ostensibly a celebration of the end of the Second World War. The framing title "Virtuozno" extends from the solo-piano role in the Mozart concerto to the orchestral virtuosity of both symphonies, presented by a single artist who conducts and plays from the keyboard.
