About this event

Barrie Kosky's staging of Orphée aux enfers treats Offenbach's mythological burlesque as a deliberately theatrical, comic-style piece. Originally a co-production with the Salzburg Festival and Deutsche Oper am Rhein, it premiered at the 2019 Salzburg Festival and arrived in Berlin in December 2021; the current run is a revival in the Schillertheater's Great Hall. Rufus Didwiszus designs a brightly colored, gaudy underworld centered on an oversized Baroque sofa and a devil statue; Victoria Behr creates the costumes; Franck Evin shapes the lighting. Otto Pichler’s choreography is integral, with dancers doubling as mythological creatures—bouncing bees, glitzy devils, and a notorious can-can ensemble—culminating in high kicks even when no one is watching.
