About this event

This Staatstheater Braunschweig production is a one-person staging of Alessandro Baricco’s monologue “Novecento – The Legend of the Ocean Pianist,” performed in Karin Krieger’s German translation. In the theatre’s repertoire since 2000, it is performed exclusively by company member Götz van Ooyen. Direction, set, and costumes are by Uta Gosselck-Perschmann together with Götz van Ooyen; sound design is by Thomas Wolter. Conceptually, the production looks back to the rehearsal stage in the basement of the Kleines Haus, where the Braunschweig premiere took place in 2000. The stage is deliberately minimal; the dramatic impact arises from the solo actor’s versatility. Dramaturg Alexander Kohlmann attributes the production’s enduring success to the constant discovery of new nuances in the piece. The current revival (from 9 October 2026) returns Novecento to the running repertoire.
