Gershwin and Stravinsky—both geographically and musically—seem far apart. While the Russian modernist radically expanded musical tradition with loud sonorities and jagged harmonies, the American musical genius perfected “symphonic jazz” with bustling rhythms, car horn sounds, and saxophones. What unites them is a city: Gershwin’s stay in Paris in 1926 inspired his famous tone poem An American in Paris. As early as 1913, Stravinsky—amid scandal—premiered his ballet score The Rite of Spring there. In 1925, Gershwin and Stravinsky met in person for the first time in New York. One hundred years later, they meet again at the Gärtnerplatztheater.
