The Concertgebouw frames this concert around Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor, D 810 (“Death and the Maiden”). The programme note observes that in Death and the Maiden the inescapable, cold presence of death is set against the comforting nature of the same theme in Schubert’s original song. Opus13 builds a three-work programme around that anchor, juxtaposing Mozart’s late “Dissonance” quartet, Adès’s Arcadiana, and Schubert’s Romantic-era masterpiece. Opus13 is presented as a young, prize-winning string quartet, here in its Het Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal debut in this configuration. The ensemble takes its name from Mendelssohn’s Op. 13, the first work the four played together after meeting in Oslo in 2014. The concert is part of Het Concertgebouw’s in-house programming (Eigen Programmering) and uses the intimate Kleine Zaal, ideal for chamber music.
