This concert is part of Het Concertgebouw’s Klassieke Meesterwerken series, presented by Het Concertgebouw Eigen Programmering. The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, a flexible ensemble of 25–45 musicians led from the first violin desk by concertmaster Gordan Nikolić, performs three contrasting masterworks: Mahler’s contemplative Blumine, Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with Truls Mørk as soloist, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. The orchestra typically performs without a separate conductor; for this production, musical direction is led from the concertmaster’s chair by Nikolić. The programme shows how music by Shostakovich, Beethoven and Mahler—composers famed for their grand symphonies—also thrives in the transparency of a chamber orchestra. The evening includes an intermission, with complimentary drinks included. This is a straight concert performance with no staging.
