The program takes the form of a “concert sandwich”: two iconic 19th-century German orchestral works frame a single 20th-century English violin concerto at the centre. The opening work, Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture, was composed in gratitude for an honorary doctorate and is full of student songs and exuberant moments. The Walton Violin Concerto, composed in 1939 at Jascha Heifetz’s request, demands considerable virtuosity from the soloist and serves as the concert’s showcase item, here interpreted by Frank Peter Zimmermann. The programme closes with Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra, based on Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical writing. Presented by Concerto Budapest at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall (Müpa Budapest), with conductor Arvid Engegård and soloist Frank Peter Zimmermann, as part of the orchestra’s 2026/27 “À la carte” series (code F2).
