About this event

The semi-final of the 2026 Solti International Conducting Competition is a public, ticketed-but-free event at the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Five of the ten semi-finalists conduct on Day 1 (5 October), with the remaining five on Day 2 (6 October). Each candidate conducts the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and works with vocal soloists on paired Mozart–Puccini arias, plus a short contemporary symphonic work commissioned for the competition. The specific pairings and contemporary piece are assigned by random draw. The sessions on Day 1 run 16:00–18:40 and 19:45–21:30. The competition is organised by Müpa Budapest in collaboration with Hungarian public media, reviving the spirit of Hungary’s renowned 1974 International Conductors Competition, with Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi as Patron and an international jury chaired by Pinchas Steinberg.
