FRATELLO SOLE, SORELLA LUNA is a theatre project devoted to the human and spiritual journey of Saint Francis of Assisi, created for the 800th anniversary of his death (1226–2026). Playwright Angela Demattè adapts the original screenplay of Franco Zeffirelli’s 1972 film, co-written with Suso Cecchi D’Amico and Lina Wertmüller, while director Piero Maccarinelli leads a cast that weaves acting and singing. The film’s music—by Donovan and, in the Italian version, by Riz Ortolani—has been newly arranged for the stage by Alessandro Nidi, who also contributes original compositions. Blending text and music in a contemporary stage language, the production offers a fresh reading of a classic of Italian cinema. Following its national premiere at Teatro Lyrick in Assisi (5–7 March 2026), the show embarks on a 2026–2027 national tour across Italy.
