About this event

Ermione is presented by MusikTheater an der Wien as a single concert performance of Rossini's rarely staged 1819 azione tragica, marking the work's first appearance in Vienna. The production stars dramatic coloratura soprano Anastasia Bartoli in the title role, following her acclaimed portrayal at the 2024 Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. Corrado Rovaris conducts the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, with the Arnold Schoenberg Chor prepared by Erwin Ortner. In concert form, the presentation highlights Rossini's through-composed declamation rather than traditional secco recitatives, an approach that made the 1819 Naples premiere controversial. The opera is framed as a bold pre–bel canto experiment, with four equally prominent protagonists enmeshed in unrequited love, defying the single-hero convention of its time. An introductory talk takes place in the theatre 30 minutes before curtain. The performance is sung in Italian with German surtitles.
