Giuseppe Verdi, the Italian master of operatic drama, composed the requiem mass as a tribute to the writer and poet Alessandro Manzoni. The work is both a prayer and a theatre piece in which hushed pleas alternate with overwhelming choral eruptions such as the “Dies irae!”. It is precisely this operatic quality that means Verdi’s Requiem is rarely used in liturgical practice, and it is this dramatic energy that the NDM production brings to the stage. Four soloists, a powerful chorus, and a large orchestra wage a struggle with the fear of death and a search for light. The Milan premiere in 1874 met with a triumphant response, and the work remains among the most striking vocal‑symphonic scores of the 19th century. In a single evening, the Requiem offers both a cappella whispers and a sound that shakes the hall, reminding us that faith and doubt are as human here as in Verdi’s operas. This production presents a scenic treatment of the funeral mass in its revised 1875 version.
