Les Fables De La Fontaine

This concert marks the 400th anniversary of Jean de La Fontaine’s birth with a selection of his fables set to music from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Conceived as a “concert chansigné,” it blends sung performance with simultaneous sign-language interpretation to welcome both hearing and deaf/hard-of-hearing audiences. The program is suitable for all ages from 6+. Musicians of Orchestre national Montpellier Occitanie perform with mezzo-soprano Eugenie Joneau, actress-narrator Marine Monteiro, and sign-language performer Delphine Saint-Raymond. Under the outside eye of Vincent Bexiga, the staging and accessibility remain coherent and integrated. Subpac vibrating vests—used here for the first time at Opéra Orchestre National de Montpellier—provide a tactile transmission of low frequencies. The program places Clérambault’s fables (arr. Steven Tanoto) alongside overtures by Gluck and Grétry and Offenbach’s Six Fables de La Fontaine, highlighting how different eras set La Fontaine’s texts to music.
