This SymphoJazz concert unites Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker music with Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s landmark 1960 jazz reimagining. Led by conductor Yaron Gottfried and performed by the Haifa Big Band, the program contrasts the original orchestral character of the Nutcracker with Ellington/Strayhorn’s big-band transformation—swing rhythms, jazz harmonies, and improvisation. The Ellington/Strayhorn suite re-titles familiar dances—such as 'Sugar Rum Cherry' for the Sugar-Plum Fairy—and recasts them for saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section. Gottfried’s SymphoJazz concept places the performance at the intersection of symphonic repertoire and jazz practice, creating a musical dialogue between two traditions within a single concert.
