Les Indes Galantes – de la voix des âmes is a choreographic concert that fuses Jean-Philippe Rameau’s 1735 opéra-ballet with the raw energy of hip-hop, krump, voguing, and other urban street dances. Originating in Bintou Dembélé’s collaboration with conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón on the landmark 2019 Opéra Bastille staging, this concert-format version reframes the material for the concert hall while preserving its vocal, choral, and orchestral forces. Dembélé’s concept seeks to connect the incantatory power of Rameau’s music with the cathartic force of contemporary street dances, using gesture and movement to question and decolonize the opera’s exoticized narratives. The result is a compact, touring production where four vocal soloists, chorus, and Cappella Mediterranea interact with Structure Rualité’s dancers to create a living dialogue between Baroque sound and today’s dance vocabularies.
