The Jupiter Ensemble, led by lutenist Thomas Dunford, appears at the Kölner Philharmonie with a concert centred on the music of English Renaissance master John Dowland, as part of the venue’s 2025/2026 “Original Sound” series. Celebrated by BBC Music Magazine as the “Eric Clapton of the lute,” Dunford serves as artistic director of the Jupiter Ensemble, a dynamic period-instrument group acclaimed for vivid, intelligent programming and virtuosic playing. This engagement on Germany’s national holiday (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) forms part of an international tour that also includes Wigmore Hall in London and highlights Dowland’s lute songs, galliards, ayres and fantasias through a mix of solo and ensemble pieces, performed with historically informed style and fresh immediacy.
