About this event

Presented under the thematic title “A Requiem of Our Time,” this concert pairs two works that center on the suffering and innocence of youth. Schumann’s concise Requiem für Mignon, Op. 98b, a Goethe setting from 1849 for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, provides a contemplative prelude. It is juxtaposed with Tippett’s large-scale oratorio A Child of Our Time (1939–41), which universalizes the story of a persecuted teenager and counters violence and exclusion with moments of communal reflection through African-American spirituals. The collaboration brings together the Rodenkirchener KammerChor und Orchester (RKCO), the Philharmonischer Chor Köln, and Onzemble Coeln, and forms part of the Kölner Chorkonzerte subscription series.
