About this event
“Delirium” frames an all-Schumann symphony concert around the composer’s fevered bursts of inspiration. Program notes highlight that Schumann wrote his Cello Concerto in A minor in about two weeks in 1850, a work shimmering with enchantment and narrative drive yet shadowed by forebodings of his later mental crises. Likewise, the Second Symphony in C major was sketched in just 16 days during a period of severe physical and psychological strain; Schumann later said composing it brought him “respite and healing.” The concert opens with the Manfred Overture, drawn from Byron’s drama about a tormented hero, mirroring the program’s exploration of extremity and inner turmoil. Riccardo Minasi leads the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, and Anastasia Kobekina—continuing the orchestra’s collaboration with Kronberg Academy—performs the Cello Concerto.
