Impulse: Music in Motion is a memorised, kinetic performance pairing Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony (Barshai’s orchestration of the String Quartet No. 8) with Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Created with Swedish dancer-choreographer Orjan Andersson, the project removes conventional concert barriers: Scottish Ensemble’s players perform without music stands or scores, moving through choreographed spatial patterns that make the musical gesture visible. The stark intensity and autobiographical charge of the Shostakovich contrasts with the warm lyricism and Classical homage of the Tchaikovsky. Andersson’s concept treats sound as action and movement as the music’s echo, allowing the ensemble’s agility to generate fluid stage pictures. The collaboration aims for a total artwork in which hearing and seeing become inseparable. Presented without intermission. Supported by Kuratorium KoelnMusik e.V.
