Dulcinea is a theatrical and musical creation written and directed by Juan Carlos Rubio, starring Paloma San Basilio with live piano by Julio Awad. The piece revisits Cervantes’s iconic figure to give her a voice of her own, transforming Cervantine texts into a dramatic monologue that blends literature, music, theatre, and reflection. The staging is deliberately minimalist to focus attention on the performer and the pianist. Awad’s original score and live presence at the keyboard provide the emotional backbone, supporting San Basilio’s delivery throughout. The concept grants Dulcinea agency over her myth, speaking with humor, pain, irony, and absolute sincerity. The work questions the place of ideals in today’s world and the relevance of chivalric values now. It is musical theatre in an intimate format—closer to a spoken monologue with music than to a conventional musical—creating a direct, personal connection with the audience.
