Part of Ensemble Locatelli’s 2026 season at Bergamo’s Teatro Donizetti, this concert traces the string quartet’s evolution from Classicism to early Romanticism through three emblematic works. Haydn, the acknowledged father of the quartet, anchors the program with Op. 20 No. 2, from the landmark “Sun” quartets. Mozart’s youthful K. 156, composed during his travels in Italy, shows the clarity and lightness of his early chamber style. Mendelssohn’s A minor Op. 13 (1827), written at eighteen, brings the genre into full Romantic bloom with lyrical depth and emotional intensity. The Ensemble Locatelli String Quartet performs using period-informed practice—setups and strings as in the composers’ time—aiming to recreate the historical sound world with gut strings and historical bowing. The concert takes place in the intimate Ridotto Gavazzeni, ideal for chamber music acoustics.
