About this event
This concert features Spanish and Italian Baroque sacred music performed by La Grande Chapelle, a Spanish vocal and instrumental ensemble specializing in historically informed performance of early sacred repertoire. Founded in 2005 and directed since 2007 by musicologist Albert Recasens (succeeding his father Ángel Recasens), the ensemble is known for championing Spanish artists and for its European outlook, bringing together singers and players versed in historical performance practice. The program bridges Iberian liturgical traditions and their Italian connections: Antonio Soler’s Magnificat and excerpts from José de Nebra’s 1759 Vísperas—Laetatus sum, Lauda Jerusalem, and Domine probasti me—reflect mid-18th-century Spanish sacred style, while Domenico Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater, written for ten independent voices during his Roman tenure at the Cappella Giulia, stands in the Palestrina tradition, favoring textual clarity and austere devotion.
