This program pairs Richard Strauss and Jean Sibelius, two composers who confront the link between nature and transcendence in their late works. Between Strauss’s valedictory Four Last Songs—an elegy on life’s end where nature becomes a passage—and Sibelius’s elemental Fifth Symphony—born of transfiguration by nature and a farewell to Romanticism—emerges a diptych: one facing the dawn, the other toward silence. The performance is led by an all-female duo: soprano Christiane Karg and conductor Dalia Stasevska. Part of Maison de la Radio et de la Musique’s “Concerts courts” (about 70 minutes), the concert distills the listening experience by uniting intimate vocal meditation with symphonic breadth, performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Stasevska, a leading Sibelius interpreter.
