Gargoyles — Four Panels for a Temple of Memory is part of the Cistermúsica “Fronteiras” cycle in Alcobaça. The program brings together turn‑of‑the‑century French color with contemporary Portuguese voices. Debussy’s Sarabande (in Ravel’s orchestration) and Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 3 (in Debussy’s orchestration) frame the first half with impressionist hues and a lineage of influence — Satie via Debussy, Debussy via Ravel — spanning three generations. The second half features two current Portuguese composers: Cesar Rafael’s The View from Halfway Down and Nelson Jesus’s Profundo Abissi, contemplative, image‑driven works resonating with themes of memory. The concert concludes with António Victorino d’Almeida’s Concertino for Saxophone, a virtuosic showcase for soloist and orchestra, with Mário Dinis Marques as soloist. Within the Fronteiras cycle, the program crosses periods, schools, and traditions, highlighting dialogue between the French legacy and today’s Portuguese creation.
