This concert centers on Mozart, weaving together an opera overture and arias with a symphony, in dialogue with Respighi’s songs. It opens with excerpts from The Marriage of Figaro — the Overture and the Countess’s arias “Dove sono i bei momenti” and “Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro,” suffused with melancholy and longing. These operatic moments introduce a thread of Italian opera running through the evening. The keystone is Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter,” his final symphony and a pinnacle of instrumental writing. Its nickname evokes Roman deities, resonating with the Respighi work. Ottorino Respighi’s Deità silvane is a five-song cycle conjuring fauns and nymphs, sung by soprano Marianne Croux. Throughout, the program interlaces mythic imagery with the Italian operatic tradition. A “mystery work” completes the program.
