Pre-Christmas Ballet is a collaboration between the Arctic Philharmonic and the Tromso Municipal School of Music and Performing Arts. The production pairs two works by Prokofiev to explore life’s contrasts, from childhood innocence to adult catastrophe. The evening is framed as a journey through opposing forces—small, innocent moments alongside complete chaos—with Prokofiev’s music as the through-line asking what it means to be human. Act I features the youngest dance students in Peter and the Wolf, focusing on a boy who, despite his grandfather’s warnings, confronts a lurking danger. Act II shifts to Romeo and Juliet, following the lovers through rapture and disaster, propelled by Prokofiev’s dramatic score. Tromso’s Pre-Christmas Ballet tradition spans about 20 years, presenting dance students on stage with professional orchestral musicians.
