Mørketidskonserten is a long-standing tradition at Tromso Cathedral, marking the onset of the Arctic dark season. Held for over a decade, it is described as a space for calm and reflection, offering a pause before the year-end rush. The 2026 edition presents Schubert’s final piano sonata, Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major, D. 960, in a newly commissioned arrangement for chamber orchestra by Henning Kraggerud (leading from the violin) and Bernt Simen Lund. The cathedral setting and the seasonal darkness—often experienced in low light or candlelight—shape the experience, giving the concert a contemplative, ritual character. Composed in the final months of Schubert’s life in 1828, the work’s themes of mortality, stillness, and transcendence resonate with the concert’s framing. The orchestral arrangement broadens the sonic palette while preserving the work’s intimacy, allowing the audience to hear the sonata through a collective ensemble voice.
