About this event

This production brings together Sergei Rachmaninov’s three one-act operas into a single evening, placing them in a charged dialogue with one another. Power, control, and corrosive greed form the binding themes, alongside a love that transcends guilt and death. Directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov—renowned for his radical de-romanticization—the staging probes the darkest depths of human nature. Tcherniakov also designs the set, creating a unified visual and dramaturgical concept across all three works. Costumes are by Elena Zaytseva and lighting by Gleb Filshtinsky. Gianandrea Noseda, General Music Director of Zurich Opera House since 2021/22, conducts. These three works are rarely presented together; two receive their first Zurich staging.
