This concert serves as the opening event of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera's 2026–2027 season. Led by Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Ari Pelto, the program traces a journey from Nordic landscape to Romantic fire. The evening begins with Sibelius's Finlandia, setting a cinematic, nationalistic tone, continues with Wagner's majestic orchestral excerpts from Act III of Die Meistersinger, and concludes with Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, the composer's final completed orchestral work noted for rhythmic vitality and rich color. Presented at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center, the season opener showcases the orchestra under Pelto’s leadership in a purely orchestral, unstaged format. The title “Nordic Lights & Romantic Fire” reflects the arc from Sibelius’s Nordic idiom through Wagner’s Romantic grandeur to Rachmaninoff’s late-Romantic intensity.
