This program pairs two works by Ludwig van Beethoven with Benjamin Yusupov’s contemporary concerto Nola, creating a dialogue between Classical tradition and modern sound exploration. It opens with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, a compact, dramatic tone painting. At the center is Yusupov’s Nola (1994), a concerto for various flutes and string orchestra that expands the usual flute family with bass flute, contrabass flute, and a membrane flute; microphone amplification renders the quietest nuances audible and unveils novel timbres. Yusupov blends modern European techniques with Eastern folk elements shaped by his Tajikistani origins. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F major, noted for its humor, buoyant, dance-like character, and brisk tempi—distinct from the Seventh’s drama and the Ninth’s monumentality. Program notes highlight Beethoven’s backward glance to Haydn’s lessons while pointing toward Romanticism. Total running time is about 1 hour 10 minutes without intermission.
