This concert programme draws a thematic thread through the British Isles. Edward Gardner, Honorary Conductor and former Music Director of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducts three works connected by British inspiration: Berlioz’s Shakespeare-driven King Lear overture, a newly commissioned piano concerto by the British composer Mark Simpson written for Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, inspired by the composer’s travels in Scotland. Mark Simpson is a prize-winning composer and clarinettist whose influences include György Ligeti, Pierre Boulez, and Thomas Adès. His piano concerto was commissioned for Víkingur Ólafsson by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in partnership with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonie Essen, and this performance marks the Nordic premiere. Supported by the Grieg Foundation, the programme also reflects Gardner’s acclaimed Mendelssohn cycle with the Bergen Philharmonic, making the Scottish Symphony a natural centrepiece.
