This concert evokes the summer atmosphere of Granada: a warm breeze, the scent of orange trees, and the distant pulse of a flamenco fiesta. Thomas Beijer and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra explore Spanish musical identity through works by Turina, de Falla, and Dutch composer Jan-Peter De Graaff. As AVROTROS Artist in Residence for 2026–2027, Beijer takes center stage as piano soloist in de Falla’s Noches en los jardines de España, a piece poised between piano concerto and symphonic poem. The program also features the two orchestral suites from de Falla’s ballet El sombrero de tres picos, steeped in folk melodies and flamenco rhythms. De Graaff’s Le café de nuit, inspired by Van Gogh’s painting, provides a contemporary counterbalance, probing the tension between joy and danger, alertness and inebriation. Presented within the AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert series at TivoliVredenburg’s Grote Zaal, the evening includes an intermission.
