John Neumeier’s The Lady of the Camellias is one of the great narrative ballets of the 20th century. Created in 1978 for Marcia Haydée and Stuttgart Ballet and re-staged for Hamburg Ballet in 1981, it has since entered the repertoires of major companies worldwide. Mirroring the novel’s flashback structure, Neumeier weaves Armand’s grief-stricken present with memories of his love for Marguerite. Set to the poignant music of Frédéric Chopin, the ballet unfolds as a drama of longing, renunciation, devotion, and devastating loss. Jürgen Rose’s costumes and sets align perfectly with the dramaturgy, pairing magnificent ball gowns with sparsely furnished, atmospheric rooms. Live piano with orchestra provides the work’s emotional heartbeat across its three-act arc.
