About this event

This Regensburg revival presents Leonard Bernstein’s Candide as a concert version without conventional staging. Instead of sets and scene changes, live illustrations by Robert Nippoldt and Florian Toperngpong are projected onto a large screen, wittily and sometimes risqué visualizing the whirlwind journey across the globe. The more than thirty musical numbers are thus narrated visually. Loriot’s German interludes connect the English-sung numbers with a humorous framework. Under Ronny Scholz’s concept and direction (also serving as dramaturg), each number is treated as a self-contained “gem” to guide the audience through the many locales and plot turns. The concept originated in Münster (2019), was adapted for Regensburg (2022), remounted in Lübeck (2025/26), and returns to Regensburg in 2026/27 with updated casting.
