This concert is part of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's 2026/27 "Brahms Revealed" season, led by Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann. The series explores Brahms's symphonic voice in the shadow of Beethoven and through his own inner passions. Stutzmann describes the Brahms symphonies as central to her early journey as a conductor, long imagined before becoming reality. The "Brahms + Wagner" program pairs Brahms's Symphony No. 3 with orchestral excerpts from three Wagner operas, invoking the historical rivalry between the composers as a complementary dialogue. Brahms’s structural rigor stands alongside Wagner’s sweeping dramatic impulse. The evening places the Brahms symphony between Wagner selections to illuminate tensions and affinities across Romantic symphonic and operatic traditions.
