A new Washington National Opera production reimagines Mozart’s Idomeneo while preserving the original score. Co-conceived by Francesca Zambello and Kelley Rourke, it draws on the clarity of ancient Greek theater. A newly created character—the Trojan Woman—replaces traditional recitative, acting as a guide who sharpens and propels the drama rooted in the Trojan War. The orchestra is placed on stage to create a fully immersive experience, dissolving the divide between musicians and singers and centering the music within the action. Described as a theatrical distillation, the staging streamlines the opera to heighten its narrative impact. Set design is by Lawrence E. Moten III, and the production tagline is “For family, every bargain has a price.” The cast features artists connected to WNO’s Cafritz Young Artist Program, celebrating its 25th anniversary in the 2026–27 season. Idomeneo is presented at Sidney Harman Hall as part of WNO’s first season operating independently of the Kennedy Center.
