Taming The Animal is the concert incarnation of Yoann Kempst’s 2017 album, built around the tension between untamed musical energy and disciplined control. Kempst describes seeing himself as an “animal,” both ferocious and sensitive, and the project channels that duality by taming impulses and transforming doubt. The programme moves fluidly between distortion-driven power and introspective lyricism. Musically it inhabits a jazz–rock fusion space, with shades of Mike Stern and Pat Metheny in the guitar sound. The guitar–bass–drums trio enables tight ensemble interplay as well as broad improvisational stretches. The sonic palette blends feedback and distortion with refined harmonic writing, highlighting the project’s core theme of instinct meeting reason.
