This concert is the first half of the complete set of Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos, performed on period instruments by the Freiburger Barockorchester. The program features Concertos Nos. 1, 2 and 6. No. 1 dazzles with its horns; No. 2 pushes virtuosity for trumpet, flute, oboe and violin; No. 6, without violins, highlights violas and viols for a darker, more intimate sonority. Paired with Part 2 later the same day, the cycle is placed in its 1721 context, when Bach offered the concertos to the Margrave of Brandenburg—courtly music serving as a language of power as well as art.
