When Thomas Adès leads the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, a concert unfolds where the grand visions of Romanticism meet the fire of modernism and Dante’s dramatic underworld. Franz Liszt’s Les Préludes opens with philosophical images of the world’s origins, before Tomo Keller and Sascha Bota step forward in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s radiant Sinfonia concertante, one of the most beloved works for violin and viola. After the interval, the mood deepens with centenarian György Kurtág’s concentrated and charged Movement for Viola and Orchestra, before Adès guides us into his own musical reading of Inferno and homage to Liszt—an orchestral suite that crackles with sharp contours, humor, heat, and virtuosic imagination.
