Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor opens the concert, spotlighting Swedish cellist Jakob Koranyi in a work that fuses virtuosity with dramatic tension. The concerto’s tightly integrated three-movement design launches with a cascade of notes, shifts to a graceful minuet with solo cadenza, and returns to its opening material—music that won instant success at its 1873 premiere. The center piece, Grażyna Bacewicz’s Musica sinfonica in tre movimenti, reflects conductor Marta Gardolińska’s advocacy for Polish repertoire: neoclassical clarity blended with Polish folk elements across movements titled Tesi, Dialogo, and Gioco. Premiered in Stockholm in 1965, it reportedly drew foot-stomping enthusiasm. The program closes with Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46—Bohemian and Moravian-inflected dances whose publication in 1878, commissioned by Simrock at Brahms’s urging, propelled Dvořák to international fame.
