This chamber concert highlights the oboe and its vocal qualities. Three works frame the idea: Klughardt’s Schilflieder and Loeffler’s Two Rhapsodies after poems by Maurice Rollinat—both for oboe, viola, and piano—and Mozart’s Gran Partita, K. 361, heard here in C. F. G. Schwencke’s rarely performed arrangement for piano, oboe, violin, viola, and cello. The famous Adagio from the Gran Partita, popularized by Milos Forman’s film Amadeus, takes on chamber intimacy in this version, with the oboe carrying many of the original wind solos. Mozart’s notion of the oboe as a “gently lamenting voice” anchors the program’s curation—an idea that, while one-sided, explains why composers so often treat the instrument like a singer within the ensemble. Members of the Dresden Philharmonic perform together with pianist Danae Dorken. The concert runs approximately 1 hour 45 minutes without intermission.
