The German bass began his career in Berlin’s opera houses, but when György Solti invited him to sing Sarastro in The Magic Flute, René Pape’s international career almost immediately continued on the stages of the world’s leading houses — Milan’s La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, Bayreuth, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In addition to the imposing bass roles of Verdi, R. Strauss, Gounod and Mussorgsky, his name has become closely associated with Wagner’s art; he has also appeared in the monumental symphonies of Beethoven and Mahler. Hungarian audiences have heard him several times over the past decade; his first appearance in Budapest was the closing concert of the Opera’s 2017 MagyarFeszt, where he delighted listeners with arias by Verdi and Wagner. Within the Star Evenings with Piano series, he will showcase another facet of his artistry in the Opera House’s superbly acoustic “concert hall.”
