Founded in 1946 at The Juilliard School in New York, the Juilliard String Quartet is one of America’s most storied chamber ensembles. The group has received numerous distinctions, including the 2011 NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award for its outstanding contribution to recorded classical music. As quartet-in-residence at Juilliard, the ensemble continues an active international touring schedule. At Hyogo Performing Arts Center’s Kobe College Small Hall, the program pairs Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131—a groundbreaking work of seven connected movements—with Dvořák’s “American” Quartet in F major, Op. 96, composed during his stay in Spillville, Iowa and enriched by influences from African-American spirituals and Native American music. Renowned for its intimate acoustics, the hall is ideal for the subtle textures of chamber music. This appearance marks a return for the Juilliard String Quartet following its October 2013 concert at the same venue.
