About this event
This concert is part of the Juilliard School's 2026–27 Music Division season, which features world premieres, renowned guest artists, conductor debuts, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Gemma New, the Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, returns to lead the Juilliard Orchestra in a program spanning contemporary and Romantic repertoire. The program opens with Kelly-Marie Murphy's "A Thousand Natural Shocks," a work by the Canadian composer known for energetic and vividly scored orchestral writing. The centerpiece is Aaron Jay Kernis's Viola Concerto, performed by the winner of Juilliard's viola concerto competition. The concert concludes with Brahms's Symphony No. 2, often described as serene and melancholic. All 2026–27 season performances are offered free or at low cost, expanding access to the school's artistic programming.
