Christmas Music By Candlelight – St John's Church, Hagley

About this event

Ex Cathedra’s Christmas Music by Candlelight is an annual touring choral concert presented in softly lit churches and cathedrals across the Midlands and London. The experience is immersive and unamplified, with each half unfolding as a continuous sequence of seasonal music and readings and applause held to the end of each part. The 2026–27 season is especially significant: it is Jeffrey Skidmore’s final season as Artistic Director after 58 years, with James Burton named as his successor from September 2027. This tour also includes a first visit for the series to the University of Birmingham’s Great Hall. Across 13 performances, the programme is tailored to each venue using three configurations: the Ex Cathedra Consort (small vocal ensemble, unaccompanied), the full choir unaccompanied, and the choir with organ. The concerts offer a blend of familiar carols and lesser-known discoveries, with refreshments available during the interval.
